German Week – 19 August “German Language Day“

German Language Day

19 AUGUST, 3PM

Brought to you by Deutschstunde and Goethe-Institut Sydney

Deutschstunde Sydney and the Goethe-Institut take a closer look at Learning German in Sydney. An afternoon filled with information, fun activities and German food for all age groups, followed by a panel discussion looking at bilingualism as well as the screening of the well-known family movie HEIDI (2015).

3pm to 5pm – Find out more about Learning German in Sydney

Supported by the German Consulate General, meet our local German language schools and universities: German International School Sydney, Goethe Institut Sydney, Deutschstunde Sydney, German Saturday School, FROEBEL Kindergarten, University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney (School of International Studies).

Connect with German organisations, such as the German National Tourist Office, the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and ‘German with Kids’ (German Speaking Kids Living Abroad).

With Goethe Institut’s informative and interactive station game “Autobahn” explore impressions and facts about German-speaking countries, their culture and products. It’s the perfect game for students who are about to choose a foreign language, catering for German beginners as well as for advanced learners and even for parents.

5pm to 6.30pm – Panel discussion ‘Bilingualism in a Multicultural Society’ and Screening of HEIDI (2015)

Hosted by SBS journalist Wolfgang Müller, our panel explores bilingualism in a multicultural society and consists of Karl Walter Hartleb (Consul-General of Austria), Ingrid Piller (Professor of Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University), Dr Sabina Groeneveld (Lecturer in International Studies and Coordinator of the German Language and Culture programme at UTS), and Dr Cat Moir (Professor at the University of Sydney and Chair of the Department of Germanic Studies).

HEIDI (2015) – Screened in German with English subtitles – We all know HEIDI, the story of a young girl who lives in the Swiss Alps with her Grandfather. This movie is a lovely retelling of the Johanna Spyri book about a spirited orphaned child in late 19th-century Europe, a delight for both adults and children.
